#117 Beyoncé, Burnout & The Frequency Of Leadership

This past week Justin and I went on girls/boys trips.

Justin stayed in a cabin on a lake with some of his childhood friends.

I went to Houston for the weekend with a few of my besties to see Beyoncé.

(I’ll spare you Justin’s photos 🤣)

Justin and I work together so we’re pretty much together 24/7 except for when I’m traveling for work. We planned these trips to fill our own cups — and it was the best!

Houston surprised me. It was such an awesome city! To be honest with you, I thought I’d go to Houston once for this concert, but I really loved it and definitely want to visit again.

The whole weekend there was such a cool vibe of community everywhere… and especially at the concert ofc 🐝. It happened to be Pride weekend which was the best. (If you’ve never been to a Pride parade then you’re really missing out.)

This trip made me think a lot about leadership and energy.

Because whether you’re on stage in front of 70,000 people or running a community of 70, the energy you bring matters. People can feel it, and it’s contagious.

Let’s get into it –

Your energy matters in any business that you're leading, but this is especially true in community-driven business.

When I was in Boise a few weeks ago at Craft + Commerce, I went to Jay Clouse’s Lab Offline retreat. During one of the sessions, someone asked Nathan Barry what to do when you're feeling burned out on what you're known for, but feel called to share something new.

Nathan is someone I'd consider an OG creator, and he's the founder of Kit (formerly ConvertKit). He's a CEO, but he's a Creator first.

Nathan’s said that you have to follow what’s interesting to you because people can tell when you’re phoning it in. And if you’re not energized by what you’re creating, your community will start to disengage too.

That hit me hard... and honestly, it’s something I’ve lived.

Any time I’ve felt disconnected from my work, I’ve seen it reflected right back at me in my community with fewer replies, lower engagement, and declining revenue... ouch.

But lately I’m energized, feeling in alignment, and I’m in my zone. And if you read this newsletter every week, you can probably tell!

Clients are coming in, referrals are flowing, my podcast is popping off — not because I suddenly became smarter, but because I’m lit up by the work again.

Your community feels your frequency. And it either draws people in or quietly pushes them away.

If you’re leading a community or building something with other humans in mind:

  • Take your energy seriously.

  • Prioritize your health and vitality.

  • Don’t ignore the signs of burnout or boredom.

  • Stop trying to fake excitement for something that no longer fits.

Instead, pivot with integrity.

Co-create the next chapter with your community. Be open with them about how you're feeling and where you're headed. You can crowdsource their feedback and ideas.

After you've done your due-diligence to co-create the next chapter, run a campaign to tell them what’s changing and why it matters.

Leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being real, clear, and energetically aligned with what you’re building.

Your Community Energy Audit

Here are a few quick reflection questions to help you check in with your own energy as a leader:

  • Where in your business do you feel the most alive right now?

  • What part of your work is draining you, and why?

  • If you could shift focus, what would feel more energizing?

  • How can you bring your community along for the ride?

Energy always leads. And in community-driven business, people don’t just buy your product... they buy into you.

So take care of your frequency. It’s your most important asset.
